Geochemist Workbench 18.0

Description

Geochemist Workbench 18.0

GWB 18: Professional Geochemical Modeling Software

GWB 18 (Release 18) is a major version of The Geochemist's Workbench®, the industry-standard software for geochemical modeling, aqueous chemistry, and reactive transport simulation. The current release as of July 2025 is 18.0.2, which represents the latest maintenance update to the GWB 18 series . This version introduces significant capabilities including gas phase evolution tracking, Pitzer database support, CD-MUSIC surface complexation models, and a next-generation spreadsheet interface (GSS) .

Key New Features in GWB 18

Advanced Phase & Transport Modeling

Feature Description
Gas Phase Evolution & Collapse Track evolution and collapse of nonideal gas mixtures in equilibrium with complex fluids
Boiling & Condensation Simulation Model boiling of aqueous solutions in systems open or closed to vapor loss
Kinetic Exchange Tracking Track kinetics of exchange reactions involving aqueous, surface, and mineral species
Microbial Growth Simulation Model microbial growth by arbitrarily coupling anabolic rates to catabolism

Solid Solutions & Surface Chemistry

  • Multiple solid solution models: Site mixing, Guggenheim, regular, cubic, third-order Maclaurin, and ideal formulations

  • Temperature dependence: Thermodynamic properties of solid solutions specified as functions of temperature

  • CD-MUSIC surface complexation: Full rendering of ion/oxyion reactions with sorbing surfaces

  • Triple-layer surface complexation: Includes electrostatic and supporting datasets

  • Polydentate complexation: Davis-Leckie, Hiemstra-van Riemsdijk, Appelo-Postma, and stoichiometric formalisms

Thermodynamic Database Support

  • THEREDA 2023: "Pitzer" database for saline solutions to high temperatures

  • CEMDATA 18.1: Portland cement system database (CaO-Al₂O₃-SiO₂-CaSO₄-CaCO₃-Fe₂O₃-MgO-H₂O)

  • FREZCHEM/COLDCHEM: Low-temperature "Pitzer" activity databases

  • EQ3/EQ6 Import/Export: Full compatibility with EQ3/EQ6 thermodynamic databases via TEdit

  • PhreeqC Import: Import thermodynamic datasets from PhreeqC

  • Visual MINTEQ Import/Export: Import and export thermodynamic and surface databases in Visual MINTEQ format

Next-Generation GSS Spreadsheet

  • Real-time plotting: Cross plots, time-series, Piper diagrams update as you edit

  • Increased capabilities: More analytes, more plots, and strong disambiguation

  • Equation calculation: Pose and calculate arbitrary form equations directly in data tables

  • CSV extraction: Extract reactions, log Ks, and more as CSV files for reports and tables

JSON & Data Export

  • JSON Plot Interface: Simulation results in flexible JSON format for third-party applications

  • Direct "report" integration: Windows clipboard includes "report" command output ready for pasting into documents
