Recent Developments in Global Mapper

For more than twenty years, Global Mapper's development has depended on direct interaction with users and many of the major functional enhancements can be clearly traced to individual requests.

Version 20.1 - Enhanced Path Profile Tool

The importance of the Path Profile tool has grown immensely since the introduction of the LiDAR Module. New in version 20.1 is the option to zoom in the profile view for a more detailed view of a specific section of the profile line. The updated profile display also includes a legend option to more clearly define the individual surfaces when rendering profile lines for multiple layers.

Global Mapper 20.1 introduces a default projection option. With this new configuration setting, a specified projection will be automatically applied when creating or importing any new layer.

A new tool in the expansive suite of Digitizer functions will automatically remove gaps or overlapping areas between adjacent polygons. This simple edge-matching function is based on a defined distance threshold and ensures the topological integrity of the data.

Version 20.0 - Expanded Support for Working with 3D Models

Reflecting the ever-increasing importance of 3D data in the field of GIS, many of the functional enhancements in Global Mapper version 20 relate to the software's 3D functionality. 3D Models or meshes can now be transformed into a point cloud which can subsequently be processing using Global Mapper's extensive LiDAR editing and filtering tools. A new free-flight mode provides a 3D gaming-like perspective in the 3D Viewer.

Additional new functionality includes several new options in the Map Layout tool, expanded support for finger gestures when using a touchscreen computer, dramatic speed and performance improvements, especially when working with large vector files, and a new eyedropper tool for precisely selecting a color during various raster operations.

Version 20 also sees the introduction of a streamlined licensing process which integrates the activation of the software with a customer's online user account. This new interface simplifies the procedure for verifying an order number or even requesting a temporary trial license.

Version 19.1 - New Querying Tool and Profile Line Exporting

The major functional enhancements introduced with the release of version 19.1 include a completely redesigned attribute querying tool offering multivariate attribute search options with advanced user-defined functions and expressions.; a new option to save and export 3D lines from the Path Profile tool; support for drag-and-drop docking of most floating windows including the Map Layout Editor, Coordinate Convertor, and 2D Map Views; an enhanced 3D Viewer, allowing the user more precise control over the process of zooming and panning; and consolidation of the advanced attribute management tools, such as Attribute Joining and Calculation, into the Attribute Editor Window.
