FIMMWAVE is a generic, robust, fully vectorial mode finder for 2D+z waveguide structures, which may be of almost any geometry, including SOI, polymer and etched GaAs/AlGaAs waveguides, as well as single and multicore fibres. FIMMWAVE contains a variety of robust and computationally efficient solvers optimised for generic rectangular structures often encountered in opto-electronics, circular fibres with generic radial refractive index profiles, or more general profiles such as diffused waveguides. A lot of original work has been put into this product to make these solvers extremely reliable. FIMMWAVE can also use approximate versions of these methods - ideal for rapid prototyping. FIMMWAVE combines methods based on semi-analytic techniques, which allow to tackle problems with strong variations in refractive index, thin layers, etc. and numerical methods such as finite elements (FEM) or finite differences (FDM).
