Description
To create a new model, follow the steps described in the example below. The geometry
created is a beam fixed at one end and simply supported to the other.
1. Once SAFI is started, a new untitled file is automatically opened.
2. You can save the file at any time by using the Save command of the File menu. After
having chosen the name and the file location, press the Save button.
3. The options on the General Options dialog box of the Tools menu must be adjusted
according to the project. These options may be adjusted at any time.
Editing the Geometry and the Loads
The beam which will be generated in this example have a length of 6 meters. At the creation
of a new project, a grid is displayed. By default, the dimensions of the grid are 10 meters by
10 meters and the spacing of the grid points is 1 meter.
Once the grid is visible, the members can be added graphically. Thus, click on the Add
New member button from the Edition toolbar. If the Edition bar is not visible, choose
the Toolbars command from the View menu. For this Edition toolbar to be visible, check
the corresponding option.
2. Click on the grid at the (x, y, z) position equal to (0, 0, 0). The cursor position is displayed
on the status bar.
3. To complete the member by adding a second joint, click on the grid at the (x, y, z) position
equal to (6000, 0, 0).
4. To make the grid disappear, use the Grids button from the Edition toolbar. Uncheck the
Show this grid option in the X-Y Plane tab, then click on the OK button.
5. To modify the view of the structure, use the camera commands. If the Camera bar is not
visible, choose the Toolbars command from the View menu. For the Camera toolbar to
be visible, check the corresponding option.
Section Properties
1. Click on the Select by Window button from the Selection toolbar.
2. Create a window surrounding the member to select it. Once the member is selected its line
width is increased. The member can also be selected by clicking directly on it.
3. Click on the Member Attributes button. The member attributes dialog box appears
on the screen. At this step, the list of sections is empty.
4. To add a section, click on the button and select Standard Sections from the menu.
5. Complete the input data as in the image shown below and click on the Add button.
