In order to align with DNV Software’s new brand architecture, Safeti has been adopted as the family brand for all our products and solutions in the process industries. In order to facilitate this alignment, Phast has been selected as the name for the product suite which previously included the Phast and Safeti products. Current products in the Phast package are:

- PhastRisk (formerly Safeti)
- PhastRiskFinancial
- PhastRiskMicro
- PhastFinancial
- Phast
- PhastMicro

In addition, the Multi-Component extension is available in this release, to both Phast and PhastRisk customers.

Please note that this new branding and associated naming convention does not affect your licence and your current licensing rights carry over to the newly named product versions.

Since the last full release, Phast 6.51, in April 2006 and Phast 6.52 for the financial extensions to the products in June 2006, we have been developing Phast in two main areas. The first of these is Multi-Component modelling for much improved accuracy of discharge and dispersion of mixtures. The second is improved modelling of risk from explosions using the TNO Multi-Energy model and the Baker Strehlow Tang model. In addition, we have also been working on many minor enhancements.

A number of these parallel development projects are now complete, although we know that we will not finish the enhancements to the explosion modelling until 2008. This programme of work was originally planned for release as Phast 6.6. However, so that you don’t have to wait any longer than necessary for the projects we have completed, we have made these available in the Phast 6.53 release, along with many more minor enhancements. The features available in Phast 6.53 are described briefly below and in more detail in the release notes.

Microsoft Vista
Please note that Phast 6.54 will not support Microsoft Vista. However, all products will be tested on Vista before the end of 2007 and an official release date for Vista support will be announced before the end of Q1 2008.

Multi-Component Modelling
The phased development of multi-component modelling continues with this new version of Phast. Following implementation of the new property system in Phast 6.51, work has continued to introduce the capability of modelling multi-component discharge and dispersion. The latest phase, which will be available in 6.54, is not able to model rain-out, but we feel the improved discharge and dispersion will still be of great use. Development of this significant piece of work continues and updates about future developments will follow. The modelling available in 6.54 includes:

• Discharge calculations for leaks, line ruptures, relief valves, disk ruptures and catastrophic ruptures

• Dispersion of vapour, 2-phase and liquid releases but not including rain-out
  - For 2-phase and liquid releases the new discharge
  ..modelling will predict component separation between
  ..liquid and vapour phases
  - If the material would be likely to rain-out a warning
  ..will be given but no pool will be modelled. It will be
  ..necessary to run the old pseudo-component modelling
  ..to predict pool hazards.

• New reports of phase compositions after discharge and during dispersion

Limitations are:

• It does not currently model rainout so no pool modelling

• Time varying discharge, vent from vapour space, long pipeline, in-building and tank roof collapse scenarios and the user-defined model are not yet supported

Automated Averaging Time Adjustment
In 6.53 we have added an option to select the exposure duration to be used as the averaging time without the need for user intervention. This allows toxic effects that are integrated over time to use the matching averaging time and better aligns with current guidelines provided in the regulations used in France. Using this option, the exposure time may simply match the release duration for non quasi-instantaneous single segment continuous releases. Alternatively, for instantaneous, multi-segment and quasi-instantaneous releases the exposure times can vary with downwind distance and elevation. The adjusted concentrations are used to calculate toxic effects and these are used in any subsequent risk calculations.

Other enhancements
In addition to these 2 major enhancements in Phast 6.54, there are many others which are described in detail in the release notes. Some of these are:

• Ability to define your own Surface Emissive Power or emissive fraction for jet fires and pool fires in the linked models

• Updates to the pool fire materials data to provide improved compatibility with latest literature

• Improvements to the route model with the ability to define routes using polylines, have multiple routes in a single study folder and corrected smart-run logic

• Addition of relative coordinates to define the location of objects in the risk version

• Improvements to spreadsheet features with the ability to export to as well as import from spreadsheets and create multiple folder levels in spreadsheets

• New version of reports component with more flexible reports including export to third party applications and file formats and much better copy and paste capabilities

• A number of graphing improvements including radiation against distance plots for linked flammable models in the risk versions, better facilities for setting graph defaults like line thickness and style, ability to display area under cloud and maximum footprint on legend, rotation of maps and other objects and more intelligent weather selection
